  1. I found this on a shelf at my used bookstore. The title had worn away, but there was something about it that made me want to pick it up. I’m glad that I did. Tyler’s observations about the development of China in the late 19th and early 20th century is often intensly interesting. He intersperced his narrative with various adventures and character epoisodes that are highly entertaining. Pulling Strings in China reads well for either history or good biography.
