  1. A few years ago, my friend Gen decided she wanted to learn to play chess properly. She’d figured out that openings were important, and asked me for advice on getting started.

    Well, I said, the first opening I ever studied seriously was the Dragon.

    It’s nice and simple. I remember that I got a lot out of reading David Levy’s book. But that must now be hopelessly out of date, so let’s see what the current equivalent is. It turned out to be Golubev. We each bought a copy, and I started reading it.
